During a span of eight weeks between April and June of 2007, the men and women assigned to the Lowell Street Fire Station became part of an interesting photography project and at the same time they developed a great bond and friendship with a college student who lived nearby. Emily Hamm was attending the New England School of Photography and being from a "firefighting family" (her grandfather was a fire chief, her uncle is a fire marshal and her father is a fire chaplain) she was very interested in photographing the firefighters who worked at the station just blocks from where she lived. Emily's project for school was titled "Somerville Fire Department - Tower 1/Engine 4: Anatomy of a Fire House". Emily's photographs help give the average person a glimpse into life at a fire station. She observed first hand the camaraderie that firefighters share during their 24 hour shifts at the station together. Emily developed a bond with members of the Lowell Street Fire Station while she captured their days and nights both at the station and out on calls with her camera. Below is a sampling of her work, which offers views of daily apparatus operations, being out on an emergency call, enjoying a nice meal together at the fire station, paying respect to Somerville's fallen firefighters at the Firefighters' Memorial Sunday services and views from a major fire that destroyed a home just blocks from the Lowell Street Fire Station. The fire at 11 Harvard Place occurred after Emily had finished her project and she was no longer riding along with Tower 1, but she still ventured to the fire scene to photograph her friends as they battled the flames.
